Urban wastes can be sent to garbage disposal and recycling plants through underground closed conduits, where they can be converted into fertilizers or energy sources. Heat energy and electric power can be obtained directly via wind, biology, rubbish or the solar photovoltaic panel on the urban buildings. In addition, the first hydrogen energy power grid is to be established in Dongtan, which can satisfy battery energy and fuel needs and the requirements of vehicles in particular.

Water from lakes and rivers is quite plentiful here, and can be provided as the independent yet limited drinking water after proper treatment, and sewage can also be recycled. In this way, it can not only further reduce the energy demands and operating costs, but also effectively control the pollution problems.

In terms of technology, it is the energy production and exchange center of Dongtan. Through connecting various power supply networks, heat and cold supply systems with its surrounding areas, it collects and analyzes various types of energy information, and manages and optimizes the energy production and application in Dongtan.

With regard to architecture, it is a sustainable construction in line with the spacious topography of Dongtan, being a special ecological destination for leisure, study and fun experience.

From the perspective of tourism, it integrates pleasure, study, passion and excitement, which includes energy story exhibition zone, future energy exhibition zone, wind energy exhibition zone, hydro energy exhibition zone, solar energy exhibition zone, and material resource exhibition zone, so it is the window for visiting Future World and Future Life Style in Dongtan.

Taking up 1/3 of the total Dongtan area, the Wetland Park is home to a large number of birds, serving as the baffling area and protection shelter. It provides important guarantee for restoring and reconstructing the ecological system of Dongtan wetland. At the same time, the Wetland Park will combine the functions of scientific research, education, ecotourism with holiday making. During the rational development of natural resources and proper rehabilitation of eco-environment, it aims to obtaining the harmonious coexistence between mankind and nature, being the birds' paradise as well as soul care center.

At present, the first phase project of Dongtan National Wetland Park--- 10-hectare Wetland Ecological Demonstration Zone has been completed, and construction of the 120-hectare second phase project is in full swing. The former manmade ditch and pounds have been converted into lakes, and various local benthophyte (submerged) plants, floating plants, merged aquatic plants, grasses, shrubs even sugar and water tolerance arbors are growing very well from the bottom to the slopes.

In the coming seven years, Dongtan National Wetland Park will be built into a Wetland Ecological Demonstration Zone including water birds attraction area, rare and endangered species re-introduction area, wetland service functional demonstration area and salt-tolerance plants park, and an ecological project featuring complete species and food chains will be introduced.

Equestrianism is known as King's Sport, and 8 major equestrian competitions in the world, namely Jumping, Dressage, All-round Competition, Endurance, Coach Driver, Horse Reining, Polo and Rally will be held here. Equestrian Club, Equestrian Performance Field, Polo Field, Horse Breeding Center, Equestrian Theme Park and Equestrian School, all these supporting facilities will be carried out focusing on the horse, which will inevitably play the leading role.

It is the huge horse industry behind the operation of exciting competitions. A complete horse industry chain from agriculture and husbandry to sports and entertainment and leisure is to be established, covering horse breeding, feeding, training, veterinary, breeding cultivation, breeding technology development, horse sales & purchase, manufacture and sales of horse gear, and equestrian club. Even during the off-season period, there will be approximately 1000 horses training here, thus forming a society made up of trainers, veterinarians, riders, blacksmiths and horses.

The boundless greenery, large stretch of fruit trees and vegetables are the first impression the ecological farm brings to people. In whatever season, visitors all can enjoy the pleasure of harvests. The ripe grapes, cherries, apples and peaches attract people by their red and full fruits and great fragrance. People here can grow, harvest, fish, and have a barbecue or even roam around, just experiencing the rural leisure traveling totally different from the scenes of metropolitan Shanghai and enjoying the peculiar scenery of Florence, Hokkaido or Aboriginal Areas in Taiwan.

The farm is a low energy consumption residential community equipped with heat pump system, cooling system, all-air system, outer wall heat preservation and insulation, water conservation system, drainage and noise treatment system, and dust removal system. It generates electricity from solar, wind, and biological energy, with the access to electric transmission grid, and matched with complete prevention for water, air and agricultural pollution, as well as solid waste treatment.

Before the convention of Shanghai World Expo 2010, a modern Dongtan Ecological Farm characterized by high-tech, sound ecology and leisure, and integrating recycling, zero-discharge with self-supply will be fully set up.
